BUDAPEST: Central Europe has emerged as a pivotal player in fostering cooperation between Eastern and Western nations. Central Europe’s Strategic Role in East-West Relations
At the 10th Three Seas Initiative (3SI) Summit held in Warsaw on April 29, 2025, Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok emphasized Central Europe’s significance in uniting the continent. He stated, „A strong Central Europe is not only of regional, but also of pan-European interest,” highlighting the region’s role as „bridge and cement” in East-West cooperation.
President Sulyok underscored Hungary’s commitment to the 3SI, noting that the country was among the first to join the Three Seas Initiative Investment Fund in 2024. He emphasized the importance of supporting growth-oriented companies and creating a stable, market-based infrastructure to facilitate the implementation of best market practices.
Infrastructure Development: Energy and Transport Initiatives
In his address, President Sulyok highlighted Hungary’s efforts to enhance regional energy security through international cooperation and development. He mentioned ongoing preparations for the construction of the Slovenian-Hungarian natural gas pipeline, which will connect Hungary’s gas supply network with all neighboring countries. Additionally, he pointed out the high-voltage power line connecting Slovenia and Hungary and various green energy projects as notable successes.
Regarding transport infrastructure, Sulyok emphasized the Via Carpatia transport corridor, noting that Hungary is the first country to have completed its national section of the project.
Polish Perspective: Strengthening Regional Cooperation
Polish President Andrzej Duda, hosting the summit, reflected on the 3SI’s achievements over the past decade. He stated, „The past decade has turned an ambitious idea into reality,” describing the initiative’s evolution into a platform for regional cooperation.
President Duda announced the expansion of the 3SI, welcoming Montenegro and Albania as associate members and Türkiye and Spain as strategic partners. He emphasized that the inclusion of new participants would enhance the efficiency of collaboration, especially in light of current geopolitical challenges.
Highlighting key infrastructure projects, Duda mentioned the Via Baltica and Rail Baltica corridors, LNG ports on the Baltic and Adriatic Seas, and gas interconnectors as vital for regional development and energy security.
