The History of Caritas of the Świdnica Diocese
The history of charitable work in Świdnica dates back to 1267, with the founding of St. Michael’s Hospital by Castellan Henry. In 1283, Henry IV Probus invited the Order of the Knights with the Red Star to Świdnica, entrusting them with the hospital’s management. By 1340, Duke Bolko II of Świdnica established a commandery of the Order, which carried out charitable activities for 300 years.
Although a fire destroyed the church and commandery in 1633, they were rebuilt within 50 years. Following renovations in the 18th century, the Order ceased to exist in Silesia in 1810 due to secularization. The buildings were repurposed for various uses, including trade and housing.
In 2005, Bishop Ignacy Dec, the first bishop of the Świdnica Diocese, entrusted the church and commandery to Caritas. After renovations, the complex now houses Caritas offices, a soup kitchen serving approximately 1,300 meals daily, and the Hugo Simon Charitable Center.
